Seabrook teen honored at Carnegie Hall

A twist of materials, loads of pictures, and a handful of household items is what made Lacey Leonard an award-winning artist in the annual Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition. Leonard, 18, a Seabrook resident who graduated from Clear Creek High in 2012, was one of 41 students from Harris County public and private schools to earn the prestigious award. The winning area teens, grades 7-12, competed among 200,000 entries in the 89-year-old national program. Melba Kent, HCDE regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards coordinator, said the competition has more participants each year where teachers and students are both involved. Leonard's art teacher at Clear Creek High School, Terri Foltz-Fox, witnessed her creative mind at work. Shane Leonard, who owns Into Action Recovery Center, an alcohol and drug rehab program, exposed her to a different environment that resulted in having a positive effect on her life she said. Leonard also is spending the summer sketching to give her a head start in art when she starts college.
