Time was when we birders carried a pair of binoculars and a pocket notebook as tools for documenting bird sightings. In field notes we'd jot down key identification marks, draw sketches (mine were crude) and even make notations about a bird's song using diagrams or onomatopoetic words. [...] good bird photos require an understanding of how to take the pictures, something not as simple as pointing a digital camera at a bird and firing away. Understanding the habits and habitats of birds as well as having a modicum of knowledge about bird identification takes you a long way toward capturing a true-to-life image of a bird. Setting the flash to TTL (through-the-lens) allows the flash to read how far it needs to fire through the camera's lens.
