Kristen Stewart's 'Snow White': The Reviews Are In!

Critics agree 'breathtaking imagery' makes 'Snow White and the Huntsman' the fairest adaptation of them all.
By Fallon Prinzivalli

"Snow White and the Huntsman" is not your average fairy tale. The princess is quite capable of saving herself, the prince is vying for Snow's love with the handsome Huntsman, and the Dark Forest is ever more present than any furry woodland creatures.

Director Rupert Sanders created a darker version of the classic story where Snow White gears up for battle against Queen Ravenna, and the evil witch actually has an emotional reason for why she's killing females to remain young. Kristen Stewart leads the film as the title character, with stunning performances by Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth and Sam Claflin.

Stewart will be one of the many stars in attendance at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards this Sunday, June 3, where she'll act as a presenter and compete for the Golden Popcorn in the Best Kiss and Movie of the Year categories. Until then, audiences can catch her in action beginning Friday when "Snow White" hits theaters. Read on to find out why critics are calling this the fairest adaptation of all.

The Story
"Astonishingly beautiful and breathtaking in its brutal imagery, 'Snow White & the Huntsman' is thrilling and frightening in equal measure, yet as bereft of satisfying substance as a poisoned apple. Rupert Sanders' revisionist take on the classic Brothers Grimm fable, the first feature from the respected British commercial director, upends expectations of traditional gender roles while simultaneously embracing what a fairy tale should be. It's dark and dangerous, vicious and violent. Yes, there are dwarves and adorable, furry woodland creatures but more often, death is a constant threat." — Christy Lemire, Associated Press

The Special Effects
"Director Rupert Sanders, with his first feature, has come up with some jaw droppingly beautiful shots, almost tactile in their richness, and uses special effects to enhance that look, rather than just showing off." — Bill Goodykoontz, Arizona Republic

Kristen Stewart
"Kristen Stewart is not an obvious choice for Snow White, given her habitual expression of discomfort while striking conventional feminine poses — both in movies and on red carpets. That's why, of course, she's right for this Snow White, imprisoned in a tower during puberty and with no regard for her looks: She has integrity, inner beauty. 'How do I inspire? How do I lead men?' she asks the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth), a grief-stricken drunk who teaches Snow White how to stab her opponents by using the weight of their onrushing bodies against them. She's not a barrel of laughs, but then, unlike recent fractured fairy tales such as 'Tangled' and the campy 'Mirror Mirror,' 'Snow White and the Huntsman' doesn't have a single (intentional) laugh." — David Edelstein, New York Magazine

The Dwarves
"For a while the movie chugs along serviceably. ... But then things pick up. How? Three words, as Hemsworth's character puts it: 'Oh no. Dwarves.' Yes, this version does have dwarves, and they're played by non-dwarf actors who've been reduced by special effects, and at least one of those actors hasn't been in a really big picture in some time. And they are feisty and different and delightful, and their ruminations on their loyalties to the kingdom and the young woman they acknowledge as their rightful queen help shift the picture into high gear, as does a shift from a dark forest to an enchanted wood that packs some of the movie's most magical visuals." — Glenn Kenny, MSN Movies

The Final Word
"Ravenna's delivery of the poisoned apple to Snow White is brilliantly done, perhaps the movie's best revisionist moment, but after that the momentum declines sharply. Snow White 'dies' and is revived — more mysteriously, and with less emotional impact, than in the Disney film — and then she must lead her rebel troops into battle, delivering a knockoff version of the St. Crispin's Day inspirational speech from 'Henry V' ... I'm inclined to conclude that 'Snow White and the Huntsman' is a vigorous simulacrum of classic fantasy, rather than the real thing. But keep your expectations reasonable, and that's enough to make it one of the summer's unexpected delights." — Andrew O'Hehir, Salon.

A Century Between - Renewing Vintage Jewelry

Provident Jewelry creates a series of infographics about vintage styles in contemporary pieces.

Vintage is all the rage. Styles, antiques pieces, and imitation pieces are all in vogue as long as they resemble (or are from) the past. Provident Jewelry has begun a set of infographics detailing how more modern tastes are really just the reforming of shapes and motifs from times gone by. Named ?A Century Between? the infographics pair jewelry pieces from a hundred years past with comparable pieces of today.

The first of the series titled ?Eastern Influences? shows mostly how pieces developed last century in Central Asia, and Africa. Although the final two pieces are from America and Austria respectively, both use motifs found in traditional non-western art, such as abstracted patterns. All of the images and information for the pieces on the left hand side were found through the extensive collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Meanwhile the modern pieces on the right are models from various designers. Each piece corresponds in some stylistic capacity to the piece on the left. The designers may have never seen the preceding pieces or been inspired by them. However, their blatant comparison shows a commonality through time and place for certain aesthetics. Take for example the early 20th century Ersari collar stud, and its comparison, the coral and lapis bead flower. The differences are vast, the solidarity of the preceding piece, the difference of the material, and so on. Despite this, the curving petal-lines, the use of beading and the similarity of color palette all show that the appreciation for certain shapes, lines and colors transcend time and culture.

Provident Jewelry is one of the prime buyers and sellers of estate jewelry, giving them an expertise in collecting quality pieces from the past. At the same time they have a fantastic grasp of modern jewelry trends and techniques. They have a vast repository of both types of jewelry which offers an excellent selection for the buyer. Having one style doesn't mean excluding the other, as the infographic shows. Even newer styles have an eye towards past looks, and one can achieve a vintage feeling by mixing and matching pieces from different eras and designers.

Now that vintage jewelry is the mode, modern buyers have the comfort of knowing that newly made pieces can have the same feeling of century old pieces. Today's jewelry connoisseur has the ability to get modern quality with a historic feel, or a contemporary piece perhaps inspired by ancient motifs. Provident Jewelry's A Century Between allows one to bypass time and place to discern historic and modern pieces between one another. So join the journey as Provident Jewelry leads the way. Safe travels.

Kristen Stewart Went 'Through Hell' For 'Snow White' ... And Loved It

'Huntsman' premiere kicks off Sneak Peek Week, leading up to Sunday's MTV Movie Awards.
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Our action-packed lead-up to the 2012 MTV Movie Awards kicked off in a big way Tuesday (May 29) with our first Sneak Peek Week screening, of "Snow White and the Huntsman."

Not only were we able to present an exclusive clip from the highly anticipated film and screen it for a very lucky and enthusiastic audience, but stars Kristen Stewart and Sam Claflin were also on hand for a lighthearted-but-juicy Q&A, during which they revealed the pain and gain of their arduous-yet-rewarding experience.

"I think it was way more about getting ready to go through hell rather than learning fight sequences and stuff," Stewart said. "Every time I learned something, it was so not right [for the character]. Everything that I do in the movie, I could physically do."

For Stewart's co-star Claflin, who makes an impressive entrance in the film as the dashing and very skilled archer William, the actor was happy to have seasoned action star Chris Hemsworth around on set for guidance.

"For me, I had Chris Hemsworth to look at constantly," Claflin said of who he modeled his character after. "Way to make you feel less of a man. I think the producers wanted me to be him, but he couldn't play both parts. I was training quite a lot. One day I was on set when he took his top off and said, 'Can you hold this?' and [his stomach] is literally an ironing board," he joked, before admitting that his training was not at all easy. "It was hard. It was very hard work."

Don't forget to tune into MTV and MTV.com for more Sneak Peek Week fun with stars from "Magic Mike," "That's My Boy" and "Rock of Ages," all leading up to the 21st annual MTV Movie Awards live on Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET.

Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards air live this Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET.

Precise Biometrics' Tactivo for iPhone, iPad locks data by fingerprint and smart card, is overkill for your diary (video)

Image

iOS device security has regularly been a concern of the government, but locking down one of Apple's devices for the government is still fresh. Precise Biometrics hopes to have the problem licked through the Tactivo, a combo fingerprint and smart card reader for the iPhone 4 / 4S (and the iPad, in the summer). Either method keeps data inside an app away from prying eyes, and while they won't tighten the security around the built-in apps, they do make sure a third-party app's data meets US and international government privacy specs without having to use a BlackBerry. We're not surprised that the Tactivo needs to engulf the iPhone in a full case to work its magic, although there's a micro-USB port to keep it powered and synced up. It's all a bit much if you're just trying to make sure your list of high school crushes stays a secret, and the price reflects that -- at $249 a pop, the Tactivo is really meant for agencies and companies for whom losing the data on an iPhone would cost a lot more. Still, if you're running an outfit encouraging BYOD phone use or just really, really want your secret passions to stay private, both the iPhone case and a BioSecrets app are ready today.

Backers See Huckabee Filling VP Niche

Scott Conroy, RealClearPolitics
If Mitt Romney's most pressing consideration in selecting a running mate is to find someone who can expand his appeal among independents or a critical demographic that remains up for grabs, several candidates would likely fit the bill better than Mike Huckabee. But if the former Massachusetts governor instead concludes that his right flank is not as secure as it needs to be, Huckabee may be among his best options. The winner of the 2008 Iowa caucuses remains one of the most popular and well-recognized conservatives nationwide, and his decision not to launch a second presidential run...
